Spring cleaning isn’t just for your closet or your home’s interior. As the weather warms up and you begin to spend more time outdoors, now is the time to start thinking about cleaning up your yard and flower beds.

Of course, this is important in terms of making your property more presentable but there is so much more to it than that. A proper spring clean-up will help prevent common turf diseases and pests and will also help ensure that your newly planted annuals thrive. It’s really important that a thorough spring clean-up is performed in order to get you started off on the right foot.

1. CLEAR THE DEBRIS

There is typically quite a bit of debris in an average yard following winter. Whether it was leaves that got missed, broken branches, fallen pinecones, overgrown Hosta plants, or some other lingering debris, it’s really important to get it completely cleaned up. This not only looks cleaner and more appealing, but it also helps your lawn and flower beds air out and in turn can prevent things like mold or other diseases from creeping in.

A pre-emergent application for weed control is vital. We also like to do a good aeration of the mulch in order to allow some air and minerals to seep into your plants. The better health your mulch and soil is in, the better your chances for thriving spring flowers.

Edging also goes a long way in boosting the curb appeal of your flower beds. It gives a clean, crisp look with some delineation from the lawn. Giving your beds some attention now will ensure that you can enjoy them to the fullest for the entire season.

 

3. CALL IN THE PROFESSIONALS

We’ve found that some homeowners decide to tackle their spring clean-up projects on their own. While that may work for some people, we do often find that homeowners don’t always realize just how big a job spring clean-up can be. In fact, an average spring clean-up job for us requires a crew of two to three men.
 
Spring clean-up is not always a simple job that can be tackled on a Saturday afternoon. Our typical clean-up jobs take anywhere from 20 to 30 man hours with a crew. Depending on the size of your property and the amount of work to be done, it can be a long and grueling process that you might prefer to pass on to a professional.
 
We know that your time is limited and that you probably don’t want to give up a weekend tackling your spring clean-up project. We also know that many of our clients feel it’s a lot more convenient to have us handle the work. About 90 percent of our spring clean-up jobs include hauling away debris—which alone isn’t an easy task for the average homeowner to do. It may involve renting a truck or making multiple trips to a dumping site. Many of these debris waste sites also charge for each load dumped. It’s a hassle that many of our clients simply don’t want to deal with when we can do it for them.
 
In addition, when it comes to tasks like edging, weed control, or pruning—all spring clean-up services—our knowledge and experience comes heavily into play. These are services that do require expertise. For instance, if you don’t know what you’re doing, you can actually damage or even kill a plant with improper pruning techniques.
