Quarried stone reads as permanent because it is. Sandstone and limestone suit the architecture of most Northeast Ohio homes, and a dry-laid natural stone wall develops character rather than wearing out. It's the most labor-intensive option to build well, since each stone gets selected and set individually.
Manufactured units engineered to interlock, with consistent dimensions and a range of finishes and colors. Block goes up faster than natural stone, holds a precise line, and the engineering behind it is documented, which matters when a wall is retaining real load. Good fit for terracing and for walls that need to hit a specific height.
Large stones set into the grade, best on a naturalistic property where a formal wall would look out of place. They handle irregular slopes well and read as though the landform always looked that way.
Built at seating height, usually 18 to 20 inches, and capped with a wide flat stone. A seating wall around a patio or fire feature adds permanent seating without furniture, and it defines the edge of a space at the same time.
Every wall type sits on the same foundation: excavation to solid subgrade, compacted aggregate base, drainage stone and pipe behind the face, and backfill in lifts. That's the part no one sees and the only reason a wall is still straight after fifteen Northeast Ohio winters.
