A fire pit is the most flexible option and usually the fastest to build. Wood-burning pits give you the crackle and the smell people associate with a fire; gas pits light instantly and shut off just as fast, which matters on a weeknight. Sunken pits sit level with the patio surface and disappear when not in use. Raised pits at seating height double as a surface for drinks and pair naturally with a surrounding seating wall.
A fireplace is the bigger architectural move. It gives the yard a wall, which means wind protection, privacy from a neighbor's sightline, and a defined edge to an otherwise open space. The chimney draws smoke up and away instead of across your guests, and the hearth stays warm long after the fire burns down.
