Natural wood suits traditional and rustic architecture and takes stain well. Cedar resists rot and insects on its own, and a hardwood frame can carry a substantial roof. It needs refinishing every few years to hold its color in Northeast Ohio weather.
Powder-coated aluminum and composite framing hold their finish without refinishing, which makes them a good fit if you'd rather not maintain the structure. Both come in profiles that read as clean and modern next to contemporary homes.
Pavilion roofs can be shingled to match your house, finished with a standing seam metal panel, or built with a tongue-and-groove ceiling that shows from below. Pergolas can stay fully open, take fixed slats sized to the sun angle on your yard, or carry a retractable canopy you close when you want full shade.
Because the structure is designed before it's built, lighting, ceiling fans, heaters, speakers, and outlets get wired during construction. A pavilion can also frame an outdoor kitchen or a fire feature at one end.

Working with Bruce Wiley of Exscape Designs and landscape architect Bob Zenz of The Nature Studio, they came up with a plan to incorporate existing blue stone into an incredible patio and pergola design. Using large blocks of re-claimed sandstone curb stone for steps, and large outcropping stones to work with new plantings, there is a feeling that even though it is new, it already feels like an integrated part of our home. The team worked hard in November with all its weather challenges to lay the stone and complete the project, but no short cuts were taken and now we can't wait until spring to use our new patio and pergola!”
