**There are upwards of 1.5 million car crashes per year associated with poor driving conditions caused by winter weather. **The following are five helpful tips which will aid you and yours from being included in that statistic.

|  | **Be patient.** If you cannot put off a trip all together, at least wait until the snow plow trucks have made a pass on the surface streets and laid down some salt. Also, leave yourself plenty of extra time for travel. |

|  | **Be prepared!** It goes without saying that your vehicle should be up to date maintenance-wise. High usage tools at your disposal will include a sturdy and capable pair of windshield wipers along with a quality snow scraper. Some folks even go the extra mile by keeping a shovel and some kitty litter or sand in their vehicle in the event they get stuck. |
|  | **Properly clear any snow and/or ice off of your vehicle before starting a trip. **It would be wise to pay special attention to the areas of your vehicle which could restrict your normal field of vision if blocked. Other tips include…-Make sure your tires are properly inflated.-To improve traction and prevent gas line freezing keep your vehicle’s gas tank at least half full. |
|  | **When on road decrease your normal driving speed,** brake gently when needed, and leave ample space between you and person driving in front of you. |
|   | **Use an extra level of caution while travelling on bridges, overpasses and infrequently traveled roads.** These are the types of surfaces which generally freeze first and carry the highest risk. |
